Seth hunched over, propping his hands on his knees, as the last remnants of the aerosolized drug faded. His head pounded in time with the queasy roll of his stomach. Michael leaned against the wall of the alley and waited.

“How are you not affected as badly by that stuff?”

Michael shrugged. “Probably because I’m not as enhanced as you.”

That made sense. Seth’s body would have been trying to purge the drug at the same time his cells were absorbing it and breaking it down. He straightened and drew in a breath. “This alley should lead us in the direction they went.”

Michael pushed off the wall and led the way down the narrow alley, glancing up every few seconds at the overhanging balconies. Seth peered back over his shoulder as the echo of raucous laughter bounced off the bricks. A group of women dressed in diminutive clothing and surrounding a man swayed and stumbled past the alley’s opening.

Seth shook his head at the scene and tried to push the memories of what he had witnessed in the club from his mind. Seeing what had happened on the feeds was one thing. But as he and Michael pushed and shoved their way through the hordes of bodies, what he viewed was now emblazoned in his mind. He would not have had to deal with any of that kind of depravity if it hadn’t been for his rebellious son and his determined daughter.

The effect of the drug that was spritzed every five minutes into the air had almost had him in the middle of the action. Seth snarled at the thought. Only those few seconds of clarity kept him from betraying his Lord and his wife, but he had come close. A worse thought was that his children had been there. Did they—

“Hold up.”

Michael’s whisper cut through his disturbing thoughts. Ahead of them and across the esplanade, a gazebo and surrounding area was occupied by a security force. They slipped back into the darkened recess of the alley and watched as soldiers collected items from the ground and from inside the gazebo. Three men patrolled the area, walking a tight perimeter around the small sitting area.

Michael touched Seth’s shoulder. “Can you see what they are picking up?”

“Give me a second.” Seth thumbed the contacts out of his eyes, pocketed them, and blinked to clear away the tears. He squinted and focused on the gazebo. Gloved hands reached down and grabbed two blue darts from the cobbled floor. A streak of blood marred the centerpiece of the fountain. A man stood behind the gazebo, issuing orders. “Darts.”

“Then they must have the twins.”

“I will be able to tell once they leave.”

Michael’s assumption was probably correct. The twins had been found and collected. How did Bastion learn about them? Seth reined in his emotions and buried them. There would be a time to deal with that later. First, he needed to wait.

Seth leaned his shoulder against the bricked wall. Twenty minutes passed. Soldiers congregated near a transport.
